Welcome to the Abilene Police Department
SWAT Team's Web page
The mission of the Abilene Police Department Special
Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team is to protect the lives of citizens and members
of law enforcement, particularly during high-risk incidents involving hostages,
barricaded subjects, snipers, civil disorder and the service of arrest and
search warrants. The team's goal is to successfully resolve these types of
incidents in such a fashion as to minimize the risk of
harm to our citizens, law enforcement personnel and SWAT members. The officers
who are assigned to this unit are extremely experienced in a variety of areas
of law enforcement and demonstrated excellent job skills prior to their
selection to the team. The SWAT team is a valuable resource for all segments of
the Police Department.
Currently, the SWAT Team consists
of two lieutenants, four sergeants, and 12 officers. The team is scattered through
almost all divisions in the department and all the
different companies, of the Patrol Division. They are all on call 365 days a year.
The SWAT Team is made up of three
separate units and a command post. The three teams are the Primary Entry Team,
Sniper/Observer Team, and the Support/Perimeter Team. Each team works together
as a cohesive unit to resolve incidents that officers from patrol, narcotics or
investigations are either not trained nor equipped to handle.
