Welcome to Safety City!
![]()
The Abilene Police Department, the Abilene Jaycee Foundation, and the Texas Department of Public Safety; with the cooperation of the Abilene Independent School District and many members of the Abilene business community developed the Safety City program for elementary age school children. Construction began on the facility in 1978 and opened for the 1981-1982 school year. This "city" was designed to provide fun, interactive injury prevention education to students.
Safety City is a "child-size" town of buildings, streets, crosswalks, working traffic lights, sidewalks and even a working railroad crossing. Students are faced with a realistic traffic environment similar to what you may encounter on a daily basis. The purpose of the facility was to provide third grade students a "safe" environment for applying the lessons of bicycle, pedestrian and general traffic safety they have learned in their school classroom. In 2006, the Abilene Fire Department joined the program by providing the fire safety house. School bus safety and stranger awareness are other topics that began in 2006.
Courses are held during the school year, with classes scheduled three days each week.
We Need Your Help!
Safety City is a non-profit organization, with charitable tax status. It was built by the Abilene community, for the community, on land donated by the City of Abilene. The success of this program is based in strong community support. Only with community funding can we carry on with our interactive learning activities , and enhance our programs. Your support, either personally or corporately, can make a big difference in our efforts to ensure the safety or our communities children. For further information on how you can help, please contact the Safety City staff at 325-676-6096 or via email at safetycity@suddenlinkmail.com.
